I owe you all an update on Jackson’s Failure to Thrive diagnosis. We had an occupational therapy appointment last week and Jackson gained a whopping 2 ounces, up to 20.4 pounds. He’s holding steady in the 0.93 percentile for weight and the 13th for height. The doctors and therapists would like to see him get to the 5th ideally.
The occupational therapist noticed Jackson was stronger this appointment, one month after seeing her last. I attribute that to his “heavy work” and that he can now climb onto couches using his strength instead of using his small chair to get up.
He isn’t eating *much* better but there is definitely improvement. He’s still drinking a vanilla PediaSure first thing in the morning and a Carnation Instant Breakfast at lunch time. Snacks are going better, he’s a big fan of the Organic Annie’s fruit snacks and cheese balls. So gross, I know. He sees the giant tub of cheese balls and squeals “balls.” Unfortunately, I can’t be too picky regarding what he eats. I need him to get the most calories per day and if some of them come from a giant tub of cheese balls, so be it. We are increasing his caloric intake by adding high-cal dips to every meal: peanut butter, blue cheese dressing, strawberry cream cheese and Nutella.
I spoke with the therapist about how long he would be attending OT and it looks like we may be discharged if he gains well at his follow up appointment in two months. Keep your fingers crossed for us! OT has been helpful, but I’m most relieved that he is healthy. All of the testing and therapy has been worth it, we now know he is a peanut because he doesn’t eat- not due to some underlying illness. We joke that he might make a great jockey someday! After all, I have ridden horses my entire life so I’d bet money he has the passion for horses I do ;).
