After my appointment last week with my primary care doctor, I had a follow up today with the dermatologist who squeezed me in their schedule after my doc felt the swollen mole on my face needed to be checked out ASAP. This was my first time at this dermatologist’s office and was a 100 times better experience than my last derm who barely even looked at me when I went in for yearly check ups. I’m pretty sure someone who has already had cancerous moles removed as a teenager and has all the other risk factors for skin cancer (blonde, green eyes, sunburns as a kid despite your Mom encouraging you to wear sunscreen, pale, bla bla) should get more than a glance when they come in each year.
This dermatologist (a physician’s assistant who did his PA school at UF <Go Gators!>) was awesome. He immediately made me feel better about the freckle gone bad on my lip by examining it first and declaring it a dermal mole. He said it was probably swollen from licking my chapped lips and stress. He then did a very thorough exam of all the other million (almost) moles on my body. He “mapped” them on my chart and took pictures of moles he wanted to keep an eye on and told me what to look for. He mentioned that there were 2 moles of concern, one on my stomach and one on my back, that he would like to biopsy and send out to some derm pathologists. He numbed me up, shaved them off and I will hear the results in 10 days.
I’m not going to worry about it, but for some unknown reason I just googled derm mole while writing this post and found this slideshow: Mole or Melanoma? The mole on my stomach looked pretty similar to the one in slide 18. Eh, worrying isn’t going to do anything good so I’m going to pretend I never saw that. What the hell is wrong with me and why do I always Google things like this?!
I hope you’ve had a good holiday weekend- we had a wonderful week in North Carolina for my cousin’s wedding. I’ll write about that soon because Jackson was ring bearer and cried at the altar because he didn’t want to get married… we have it on video too! Talk soon, xo.
