Amber Teething Necklaces: Hoax or Hero?

photo Amber Teething Necklaces: Hoax or Hero?

Sidney has been chewing on EVERYTHING lately and I think it’s the beginning of teething. She doesn’t seem to be in pain (yet) but as her Mama, I want her to be in as little pain as possible. My friend Katie’s son has always worn his amber teething necklace and she swears by them. Then my friend Chrystal {@mamacavy on Twitter} said even her daycare noticed when her daughter missed a day of wearing her teething necklace. I figured, why not? Let’s give this amber teething necklace a shot. While I was at the Rhody Mama’s “Mingling Moms” event at Bellani on Sunday night, a picked up a cute 10.5″ “sunshine” yellow “Inspired by Finn” brand teething necklace for Sidney girl.

While the name can be deceiving, it isn’t for the baby to actually chew on, but instead the amber releases something into the skin when worn. According to the Inspired by Finn web site,”

“When baltic amber is worn on the skin, the skin’s warmth releases trace amounts of healing oils from the amber. These oils contain succinic acid and are absorbed into the skin.”

Kind of sounds like snake oil to me, but I wanted to give it a chance. I briefly tried it with Jackson but lost it pretty much immediately after I bought it, so it never had a chance to work. I think it’s pretty cute on Sidney, but am really curious to see if it helps the teething process be a little less painful.

Have you ever tried an amber teething necklace on your child? Did it work? Is it a hoax? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this one…

We started using one on B when his molars started bothering him. With his 8 other teeth, we literally wouldn’t know he was teething or cutting a tooth until it popped through! But with the molars, he was definitely not sleeping as well, had a constant low grade fever, and he just seemed miserable. So, like you, I figured we would just give it a shot.

Well, I have to say, I am a believer. Once we started using it, he went back to sleeping through the night. A few nights over this past weekend, we weren’t as diligent with putting it on his ankle to sleep (that’s where we put it at night, so there are no choking hazards) and he was a BEAR two nights in a row. Put it back on him Monday night, no problems. So I’m pretty convinced that it works.

I registered at Bellani for the same one and then got it as a gift. I can’t wait to see what you think of it! I figured, even if it doesn’t work, it is definitely pretty.

EXACTLY my thoughts too! I figured it was a win-win: she looks so cute wearing one, so if it helps with teething? It’s a bonus!!
