Sweat test, with pictures.

This morning Jackson had his sweat test to check for Cystic Fibrosis. It was nothing at all like I had anticipated. For some reason, I envisioned a hot room and a tech collecting sweat off my poor sweaty toddler. Instead, we were ushered into a small room resembling a closet with what appeared to be a lie detector test sitting on a small table. Next to that, lay two copper plates with some ancient rubber attached.

BC Man & I looked at each other, totally apprehensive for the first time in this adventure. The pathology technician introduced herself and left us with a piece of paper to read on how a sweat test worked.

The gist of the paper was:

  • first part of the test: a colorless, odorless chemical known to cause sweating is applied to the arm
  • an electrode is attached to the arm and the technician applies a weak electrical current to stimulate sweating
  • individuals may feel tingling or warmth for the next five minutes while the electrode is placed
  • electrodes are placed on both arms at separate times
  • second part of the test consists of cleaning the stimulated area and collecting the sweat on a piece of gauze wrapped in plastic wrap
  • thirty minutes later the wrap is removed and sent to the lab for analysis

Jackson was a complete angel throughout the entire process. We think the lab tech was anticipating a terrorizing toddler when she first saw Jackson because she complimented his behavior throughout the entire process. Having “Jack’s Big Music Show” on my iPhone was a smart move and that kept his mind off the electrodes on his arms for 10 minutes. The tech wrapped the electrodes on tight, warning us that his hands might turn blue but not to worry: it was only temporary. Uhh, ok. Fortunately, they just got a little darker than normal and I didn’t have to freak out and turn all Mama Bear.

After the electrodes were removed, she wrapped up his little arms in gauze and saran wrap and sent us across the hall to the waiting room straight from 1987, complete with vintage Barney on VCR. Jackson loved seeing his first Barney episode (on VCR nonetheless, how authentic) and BC Man lightened the mood by asking {dead serious, too} if the Mom in that episode was Anne Heche.

One Barney episode later and the tech came to remove the saran wrap and send us on our way. Easy peasy and we were on our way home. I hope to hear from Dr M at Hasbro in the next day or two with results. Will keep you posted, as always.

Even without being a Mom, I think I would have freaked out about all that paraphernalia! Glad to hear it all went well. And sadly, I guess you can tell that I am related to BC Man because I don’t get the humor in his comment about Ann Heche. Sounds like something I would have said, too.

Yikes! I’m glad it went well, but I would’ve freaked looking at all of that equipment. I guess it looked more intimidating than it really was. Here’s hoping for some great results!!
